Pleurodesis
Pleurodesis is a medical procedure used to treat problems where fluid or air keeps building up in the chest, making it difficult to breathe. This fluid or air collects in the space between the lungs and the chest wall, called the pleural space, and can cause discomfort or breathing issues. It’s commonly used for conditions like pleural effusion (fluid buildup) or pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
The goal of pleurodesis is to prevent fluid or air from building up again in the pleural space by sticking the two layers of the pleura (the membranes around the lungs) together. By doing so, the space is sealed, stopping the collection of fluid or air. This helps the lung expand properly and makes breathing easier.
Possible Risks:
- Chest pain
- Fever
- Shortness of breath
- Rarely, infection or lung injury
Pleurodesis is an effective way to stop recurring fluid or air buildup and improve lung function in patients with chronic conditions.
